McLaren Formula 1 racers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri believe that Mercedes will be their toughest opponents this weekend in Suzuka. With each winning a race in Australia and China, Norris and Piastri are the top contenders in Japan, with Friday’s practice showing no signs to the contrary. Norris topped FP1 while Piastri led the chaotic FP2, which was interrupted by four red flags. Despite feeling that McLaren is still at the top, Norris was impressed by George Russell’s speed in the first practice, with the Mercedes driver only 0.163 seconds behind McLaren. Norris mentioned that Mercedes is in a good position, even though Red Bull may seem a bit further ahead but tends to get closer in qualifying. Piastri echoed his teammate’s sentiments, expressing confidence in their speed for the weekend but acknowledges the tough competition they face. McLaren currently leads the constructor’s standings after the first two races of the 2025 season, holding a 21-point advantage over second-placed Mercedes.
